The Sunset Guitar

I am David Freeman, the luthier in residence & founder of Timeless Instruments.

Why Tugaske? Tugaske Sk. was not a planned stop, I originally wanted to spend four months here then move on. Events I had been searching for continued to fall into place, so I continued to remain here. Eventually I built up the business beyond what I had perceived. The shop and business continue to evolve as skills , resources & concepts still emerge in a timely way. It is a small village in mid west Canada, I can experience silence here.

Why Timeless Instruments? The name was chosen in regards to the feel of being in this place. Someone close to me at that time commented on how timeless it felt to be in Tugaske, in the shop unplugged from the busy world. When I wanted a name for my business it fit quite well, in many different ways. It is a theme that happens as much as being planned.

What is your Background? I have always had music in my life. Playing music was part of my upbringing & continues thru my life. I started doing setups & minor repairs about 1974. TIMELESS INSTRUMENTS began in 1980. I was focusing on custom –building string instruments. The training began in 1986. The supplies I started selling in 1987. My background training is in fine arts & business. I also did some apprenticeships with people in pottery, wood carving, furniture restoration & instrument construction.

Lutherie Training - In developing the Training sessions one of my objectives was to create a timeless feel yet maintain a schedule. This is accomplished by being focused on the work at hand, so people don’t notice the hour or the day, or even the week. Guitar immersion is just that. Time becomes irrelevant,,, being involved with the work with a passion lends itself to lutherie. That is part of the training, if you want to do lutherie, you need to be engaged with it and still find it intriguing. It is like a mini apprenticeship. People from over 21 countries have made the pilgrimage to train here. Many had stated the value of this course exceeds the cost.

It is a modular system, after you have taken the initial Guitar Construction Training, you can branch into an area of your interest if you want to further your studies at Timeless. There is a good selection of course options & I am open to discussing new directions for individuals.

Timeless Instruments is licensed Private Vocational school under Sask. Education & Advanced Learning.

Supplies for luthiers? This began in 1987 as a means to feed my own production. Some people think I am a middle man, but I resaw timber into Guitar wood size and buy direct from source. As well as traditional woods, I provide an increasing assortment of alternative woods. I provide kits for instruments at different stages of completion. As a custom shop these can be switched around to suit ones needs. Custom sizes can be cut depending on the wood on hand. This is all sent out by Canada Post, World wide. If you don’t see something listed in the supplies sections simply inquire as I may have it or can access it. I have a large stock of wood and instrument accessories.

The Sunset GuitarFinished Instruments? Yes I build finished string instruments in my own designs. I will do commissions when the individual will work with me. The focus would be Guitars & resonators. I also build bouzoukis, mandolins, dulcimers, harps and other string fretted instruments. Repairing since 1974 & Building since 1980 as well as teaching since 1986, I have extensive experience with many bracing systems and various woods. I have wood that dates back to the 1960s for people that want seasoned instruments, or select from recent alternative stock. I can build a functional instrument for music or transform it into an art piece, with inlay, as well as being a great musical instrument. Prices are adjusted accordingly. I have been called a "David of all trades...master of one." Though I am just a guy trying to make a living doing what he likes. Practice makes better. I have a Lutherie Practice!!!!!!!!

Ancient Kauri Guitar Sets
Here are some of the Ancient Kauri sets we have cut to date. These are all A sets which is the best of the figure "White bait on Waves". White bait is small minnows they net on the west coast of New Zealand & eat as a delicacy. The short curvy lines depict the minnows, the changing Light reflection is the waves.

There are B sets which don't have as intense a figure & C & D which have a few flaws for the aspiring Luthier to work with.

I am building my second guitar of this wood to understand just how it works & responds. There is a lot of run out to contend! The final look is well worth the effort.

Prices are A - $295.00 B - $250.00 C - $200.00
