King Billy and Huon Pine
Limited edition of lIght, very light King Billy and Huon Pine from Australia.
KIng Billy Pine (Athrotaxis selaginoides) is a very rare conifer species, exceptionally long-lived and slow growing, and found only in Tasmania’s high country. Is very durable and rot resistant. It planes and cuts very well. Because of its softness it bruises easily. It has good bending properties. It is extremely light and very resonant. A very prized top wood in Australia. Cut from sustanable or dead stockspecies.
Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is conifer (not actually a pine) found only in the wet, temperate rainforests of South West Tasmania. As the only species of its family, it a pretty unique tree which grows extremely slowly, averaging just 1 millimetre in girth per year. This limited offer of Huon Pine is cut from dead aged wood as Huon is now protected as a species. It has a strong odor like turpentine, and has good stiffness and resonance. The timber has a very high oil content (methyl eugenol), therefore impervious to insects, waterproof, and imbues it with its characteristic sappy perfume. Due to its high oil content, it can be bent, shaped, worked and sculpted without splitting and finishes to a superb, fine lustre. Pale straw coloured when first cut, it ages to a rich honey gold. Woodworkers love it!
